The tracks here date back to that period, although you'd never guess: these 12 tracks of lush guitar-pop feel polished and complete, a million miles from any ragged road-side composition. Hecker's smooth falsetto is the immediate touchstone--clear and unsullied, the very polar opposite of Jeff Buckley's cracked, ragged high-end--and it's inevitably this which leads the songs, rather than the music. "Polyester" and "Let Me Out" are fine examples of Hecker's songwriting at its most touching and simplistic, and while the title track beckons dub-tinged electronic into Hecker's design with some success, ultimately, his greatest moments come when the instrumentation is stripped down, and he tackles his songs bare: the piano-accompanied lullaby heart-break of "The Days Are Long and Filled with Pain" is a heart-breaker with few comparisons. The first time that I heard "Polyester" I marvelled at its richness both lyrically and technically. Maximilian Hecker's voice has a certain edge to it which gets even better with "Sunburnt Days" and "Green Night". The first time that I heard this album I was taken on a journey from start to finish and it is a real joy to find an artist of real quality emerging from Berlin. I recommend this album for both when you are feeling happay and when you are feeling down as at both times it will have something new and different to offer. The last two tracks, "Let Me Out" and "Today", have a very chilled out vibe to them and the album ends almost in a whisper and all you want to do is start the ride all over again!
